Homeowners: don't paint your house until you watch this.

That fading, chipping side of your house is trying to tell you something.

Before you get quotes, watch this. Nick shows you what to actually look for, and what to ask, before anyone touches your house.

Paint doesn't fail all at once. It fades a little. It chips at the corners. It flattens out where the sun hits hardest, on the side of the house that takes the worst of it year after year.

You walk past it every day, so you don't notice. Then one day you do. By then it's probably needed attention for a while.

Nick and his crew have been painting exteriors around Shrewsbury and the Boston metro area for over 9 years. He put together a short walkaround showing exactly what he looks for on a house, what it means, and what you should know before you hire anyone to paint yours.

Real job. Real difference.

Drag the handle across either house. Same wall, same angle, before and after.

The same house finished in deep navy with fresh white trim and a red front door. A two-storey house in faded light blue with primer patches, mid-prep, ladders against the siding. BEFORE AFTER
Full exterior repaint, siding and trim
The same three-storey elevation repainted deep navy with crisp white window trim. A three-storey house in washed-out medium blue with dulled trim and weathered shingle. BEFORE AFTER
Siding, trim and window surrounds

Three signs worth checking for

Peeling paint

The surface separating from the wood, usually where moisture is getting in.

Mildew from lack of sun

Dark, damp-looking patches on the sides of the house that don't get much light.

Rotten wood

Trim and boards gone soft, sometimes soft enough that pests move in.

Seeing one of these doesn't always mean your house needs painting right now. Sometimes it does. Sometimes you've still got time. Nick walks you through the difference in the video above.

What to ask before you hire anyone

Prep work comes first

Repairing rotten wood, scraping properly, caulking, masking, protecting the landscaping. A paint job is only as good as the prep underneath it.

One crew for everything

Custom Color Interiors does its own carpentry in house, so you're not chasing down a second contractor.

Communication

Showing up on time, respecting the property, leaving it clean at the end of the day.
